DRIFTNET

SPRING 2021-WINTER 2022

ABOUT

DRIFTNET was an online community project created during COVID.

The intention was to create a webzine focused around the intersection of art, media, communication and technology.

TOOLS

Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, XD, Figma, Procreate

GOALS

Develop a visual identity with the community, create wireframes and high fidelity concepts to create the website.

AI IMAGE GENERATION WAS UTILIZED.
PLEASE REVIEW.

During the development of this project, early AI image generation models were becoming available (DALLE-1). DRIFTNET had a neutral "observational" focus on the intersection of art and tech, and often in our meetings we'd debate the potential implications of AI (as well as other digital trends we were seeing). At that time, there was not a whole lot of commonly known information available regarding it's development, such as the data sources AI was trained on, or the concerns regarding energy usage.

The DALLE-1 model was used to generate a few of the images in this project (which I will specify). This version of the model produced images with significant artifacting. It was uncanny looking, and it wasn't at a capacity yet to be convincing as a real, "man-made" photograph or illustration.

The intention of its usage was not meant to replace work that I or another individual could have made. It's usage in the project is simply meant to showcase the technology or the "medium" - the fact that it was AI, and the unsettling feelings it produced. It felt fitting for the subject matter of the project at the time.

Now at the point of writing this, AI is a huge point of controversy especially in the industry of art & design. My vague and pretentious opinion on the matter is as follows: the medium is the message, there is value in process.

During my studies, we were given the assignment of creating a magazine spread and a video advertisement promoting the fictional release of the magazine's first edition. This project was assigned in Winter of 2022, after DriftNet’s branding had been established. I decided to do the project inspired by the work done in DriftNet. I strayed a bit from the developed colour scheme, since this project was done for school, and not for the community.

Brutalist inspired design, with reference to a viral shock website (iykyk).
Some of the images utilized here and in the video include AI generated graphics using the DALLE-1 model.

The visual identity created was developed with the community via a voting process. I created the icon in the logo, and another user created the wordmark component.

The website icons were created by another member of the community as well. The colour scheme was developed by yours truly based on some moodboards created. The typography was chosen by myself as well - a monospace typeface felt stylized, legible and fitting for our webzine.

Branded emojis & stickers created for the Discord server.

PROCESS WORK

For the website, our idea was to have an experimental 3D user-experience, with floating "artifacts" representing each article of the edition. The user was to "select" and artifact and the HUD would display the information.

I've included some of the process work I've created for the branding and the UI. We've reached a point of a beta version of the site, which can be viewed if you click the button below.

While the project has primarily been on a hold, but we still get together to discuss technology & art, do small collaborative projects, and participate in GameJams.
